Jia Liu

For the live coding performance “Vinculum”, Jia Liu uses a framework she developed in the SuperCollider programming environment, which is based on autonomous feedback systems. Liu uses sine wave oscillators, additive synthesis, FM synthesis and stochastic processes as sound sources. The sine wave oscillators act as agents, each of which listens to and tracks the frequency of another oscillator, creating chains of dependencies that lead to the formation of autonomous systems. In her performance, Jia Liu alters the topological structures of the overall system and the temporal function of these agents.
Bio
Jia Liu studied composition and music informatics at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and at the Karlsruhe University of Music at the Institute of Music Informatics and Musicology (IMWI). The Karlsruhe-based artist is currently focussing on algorithmic composition, music with autonomous systems and communicative algorithms. Together with Li Song (London) and Shuoxin Tan (Cologne), she founded the network music ensemble [ _ _ _ ]. She is also a member of TOPLAP Karlsruhe (Temporary Organisation for the Pragmatics of Live Algorithm Programming).
