Sound Ecologies Part 1

Blaues Rauschen 2023 starts with the project “cycle and recycle” at Forum Kunst & Architektur: Inspired by images of the Belgian photographer Paul Bulteel, Karl-Heinz Blomann has invited 10 international sound artists to develop sound productions on the theme of recycling, which will have their premiere at the Forum. Bulteel’s photographs will also be on display in the exhibition rooms through June 23.

Sound Ecologies Part 2

With Sound Ecologies, we also intentionally want to take a look at the transdisciplinarity between sound study, aural practice, and the Environmental Sciences. Three days later at the Rabbit Hole Theater, Louretta‘s live looping arts surrounds us and we are immersed in the atmospheric drones of LOUFR. Tomoko Sauvage creates electroacoustic sound environments with water, hydrophones (underwater microphones) and porcelain and glass bowls at Neue Musik Zentrale.

Sound Spaces and Body Worlds Part 1

In Dortmund we focus on electronic music as a paradigmatic interface at the transition to the posthuman age. The aim is to experience sound spaces as body worlds between digital and analog, to trust cyborgs and to allow an immediacy of sound, because: If we perceive sound, it previously spread out in a space and then met our ear, our skin or another membrane. These are boundaries that, like sound, are fluid, grasping, shaking and penetrating – as “sound spaces” and “body worlds“.

At Tresor.West, we begin with a film by Lynn Hershman Leeson presented at the 59th Venice Biennale 2022. The video Logic Paralyzes the Heart (2021), narrated by a 61-year-old cyborg, takes a stand on the integration of the body into digital and military control systems. In it, individuals are hauntingly transformed into their data – in an age of surveillance, little more than an analog for what they are.

Dancing – accompanied by Quim Girón – Catalan avantegarde artist Moon Ribas searches for earth movements with her implanted sensor. She is followed by Ji Youn Kang, who performs with self-developed instruments between analog and digital, before we are finally accompanied into the night with the mixes of Elena Colombi.

Sonic Digitalities

Whether it’s “location determinations in digital” or “digital sound experiments”: Blaues Rauschen searches for new sound experiences in flowing materialities and digitalities. Between data, codes, sound waves and artificial intelligence, an artistic intelligence navigates itself, which we experience live at Hier ist nicht Da in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf. Sarah Rothberg and Yotam Mann open the evening with the sound performance ,,Searching for Answers in All the Wrong Places”, in which live-acting puppet avatars dance in a real-time music environment generated by AI tools. Antye Greie-Ripatti (or AGF) is a sound artist, curator and, above all, networker whose poetic as well as political practice goes beyond music.

Beyond Universal Sound

With “Beyond universal sounds” we question universally acting sound effects. In the lecture performance and a joint artist talk with Antye Greie-Ripatti and Pedro Oliveira at Atelier Automatique we discuss a situated knowledge of sound. Later, in the Schlegel Kultur Club, we oscillate between the material power of sound and the meaning of differently-situated physicality. What does immediate sound do to different bodies? How does the sonic work beyond universal sounds – or beyond universal sound?

With Pedro Oliveira we meet modular synthesizers combined with voice samples in ,,Desmonte”:  A sonic exploration meant to remind us of the aftermath of colonialism. Sudance110 works with influences from noise, classical, tribal, trance and experimental music, realizing momentary interweavings of media and sound bodies. Lastly, we explore human-non-human soundscapes with Dylan Henner.

“Situated Sound-Knowledge” Lecture & Talk >>

At the Atelier Automatique in Bochum , where culture is regularly created, shown and discussed, we also want to facilitate a critical discourse. How can we situate sound instead of claiming it as universal? How can we understand the sonic relationally and environmentally and thereby also think globally and feministically?

Vibrating Realities

Thinking sound is an activity. Thinking with sound, thinking about sound, thinking through sound: all forms of living with the sound of a physical, vibrating reality – live and loud in the Alter Wartesaal. We experience sound waves emanating from different sources and spreading in the environment with Maria Balabas, Alex Arpeggio and Elizaveta Petcheniouk (VJ), followed by Bernhard Rasinger, who combines a modular synthesizer with the latest laser technology to create a lucid-hypnotic audiovisual experience. Chagall uses a real-time controlled sensor costume to show us an interplay of human body, voice, light and music – a reactive-vibrating reality called B.A.B.Y. (Bionic Assistant for Becoming Yourself).

Sound Spaces and Body Worlds Part 2

In the Künstlerhaus/Mex Keller, ten sound art productions present different perspectives on “forest and sound”. We then dive into deconstructed sounds with JacqNoisebetween sound spaces and body worlds. Dorit Chrysler creates new sound worlds with her theremin, followed by Katharina Klement, who electrifies her zither into a new kind of sound generator. For both evenings, the audience becomes part of the flowing transformation processes between analog instrument, electronic sound generation.

Sound Ecologies Part 3

Just as ecology describes the interrelationships between living beings and their environment, we are looking for the interrelationships between place, body, sound and environment:

The Festival Finale in the auditorium of the Folkwang Music School opens, “Humanizing the machine self,” the performance of this year’s Open Sound Hack Lab. An open lab that explores the interrelationship between code and human. Jonas Bers then takes up the connections between technology, sensory perception and the physical universe. Cellist Okkyung Lee weaves us into immersive sound webs before Alessandro Cortini (NIN) creates improvised soundscapes with his Strega synthesizer.
