Robin Moedder x Thomas Machoczek

Human-made climate change is repeatedly causing unusual water levels in bodies of water – and the trend is literally on the rise. With ‘Amplitude H²O’, Robin Moedder and Thomas Machoczek examine the extent to which the simple equation ‘water = life’ still holds true today – and how water is increasingly becoming a threat to humans and culture in times of extreme weather events. To this end, the topology of the concert hall is replaced by that of water: diffusing, dripping, flowing, storming. In a 4-channel multimedia installation that combines video collage, quadraphonic modulated sound textures, vibrating drones and field recordings, the duo transports the audience into a state of flooding: one that’s overwhelming, immersive and at the same time accessible.

Robin Moedder (born in Hamm in 1980) lives and works in the Ruhr area as an interdisciplinary media artist at the interface of video, light and sound. His video installations such as ‘Dreaming in Public’ and his light environments in churches throughout North Rhine-Westphalia have met with widespread acclaim. His work focuses on the dark, disturbing and at the same time fascinating aspects of nature and the modern environment.

Thomas Machoczek, author and musician, grew up between the Emscher and Ruhr rivers – water is therefore deeply anchored in his artistic DNA. His sound installations and live improvisations interconnect analogue and digital forms of expression and explore the relationship between organic life and technological construction.
