Merche Blasco

DIY meets complex material structures: Merche Blasco focuses on a ‘horizontal relationship’ with her self-built instruments and deliberately dispenses with considerations such as precision or power. “FAUNA” is a live improvised sound practice that eludes any form of technical authority – and thus fits well into the BLAUES RAUSCHEN mindset. Using self-built instruments and artefacts, Merche Blasco processes field recordings, body movements and material textures into an open electroacoustic situation. Precision, control and virtuosity take a back seat in favour of a horizontal relationship between body, material and technology. Sound is not created here through mastery, but through listening: as a collaborative structure in which inaudible energetic forces become visible and audible.

Spanish-born multimedia artist and composer Merche Blasco lives and works in both Barcelona and Berlin. She designs and builds deliberately imprecise technological tools that enable embodied forms of electroacoustic improvisation and open up new modes of listening. Her practice aims to decentralise power and control in favour of collaborative instruments with their own agency. In addition to performances, she is increasingly developing participatory sound formats in public spaces that make collective listening and joint music-making tangible as social practices.
