Lecture Talk
- Chemical Calls of Care II
Yolanda Uriz Elizalde combines performative elements with artistic research at the intersection of biology, art, and technology. Her works are based on experiments with physical phenomena such as vibrations, electromagnetic waves, and chemical molecules that we perceive as sound, light, or smell. Through their transformation, multisensory and immersive experiences emerge in which scent plays a central role as a narrative and communicative element.
In a lecture talk with the artist and musician Tim Löhde, Yolanda Uriz Elizalde provides a direct insight into her interdisciplinary artistic practice. Using her current work “Chemical Calls of Care II” (2025) as an example, she presents key questions, methods, and contexts of her artistic research. A speculative technological system captures plant-emitted scent molecules as data and translates them into haptic sounds that can be physically experienced, connecting scent, sound, and touch.
At the core of her work lies the question of how technology can contribute to perceiving ecological relationships more sensitively and imagining more attentive ways of coexisting with other species and life forms. Alongside these insights, Yolanda Uriz Elizalde introduces the potentials of the sense of smell and presents her concept of olfactory communication.
Yolanda Uriz Elizalde lives near Barcelona, Spain and works in between Netherlands and Spain. Trained at the ArtScience Department of the KABK (Royal Academy of Art, The Hague), she explores physical and chemical phenomena such as vibration, electromagnetic waves, and molecules that we perceive as sound, light, or smell. Using digital tools, DIY perfumery, and experimental setups, she develops multisensory installations and performances that expand the boundaries of human perception. Her work has been presented at festivals such as Sonic Acts, Ars Electronica, and Sonar; since 2013 she has been a member of the iii collective (instrument inventors initiative, The Hague).
Tim Löhde is an artist and musician based in Düsseldorf and Vienna. In his installations, he creates spatial sound networks that work with loss of control, materiality, and algorithmic dynamics. His practice moves between composition, performance, and installation, exploring sound as a physical material and the interaction between perception and technology. He is particularly interested how algorithmic systems can influence improvisation and intuition. His works and music have been presented internationally across Europe and Asia.
