Using the organ as an example, the duo gamut inc reveals the historical continuity between Baroque sound machines and the digital present. Impulses, clusters and serially structured soundscapes replace metaphysical charges, and the ‘organist’ becomes a programmer. With ‘BLACK SQUARE’, gamut inc present a computer-controlled, wind-dynamic organ developed in 2025 by Tony Decap – an instrument that somehow lies between machine poetry and acoustic radicalism. Two identical modules, each with 64 covered pipes, generate stereo fields, quarter-tone layers and microtonal shifts in milliseconds, controlled by Decap’s SmartValve. CNC-milled, hand-tuned, permuted by AI, the organ becomes an algorithmic resonance body. Air pressure becomes a compositional variable, difference becomes dramaturgy; the result is a study in precision, loss of control and the independent life of technical systems.

gamut inc, founded in Berlin in 2013 by Marion Wörle and Maciej Śledziecki, operates at the intersection of electroacoustic music, machine art and music theatre. The duo develops its own instruments, works with automated pipe organs and reflects on technology as an aesthetic and social dispositive. Under the name AGGREGATE, they have been curating international concert formats for computer-controlled organs since 2019; a documentary was released on WERGO in 2024. Their productions have taken them to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, CTM, Sónar and Sonic Acts, among others.
