Kaffe Matthews
- alchemy live
Exploring an acoustic terrain: Kaffe Matthews is regarded as a pioneer of interactive sound art. Since the early 1990s, the British composer has been experimenting with live sampling, spatial sound design and generative systems. Her works often emerge from local and social conditions − she uses field recordings, acoustic environmental conditions and electronic manipulation to create organic soundscapes that set spaces in motion. Whether as a musician, installation artist or co-founder of Sonic Bikes (an instrument that plays sounds and music that change depending on where the cyclist is riding and how fast they are travelling), Matthews thinks of sound as a moving architecture, a means of interacting with the environment and technology.
Her performance at BLAUES RAUSCHEN will make this physically tangible: low-frequency waves shift, field recordings pierce abstract drones, algorithms intervene in improvised structures. Her performances are less concerts than acoustic terrains that are formed in the moment and immerse the audience in multi-layered spheres of perception. Sound is not only heard here, but felt − as a vibration, as a place, as a medium between environment and sensation.
