Hüma Utku

Psychology plays an important role in the work of Istanbul-born, Berlin-based composer Hüma Utku. She condenses field recordings, acoustic instruments, Buchla synthesis and atmospheric electronics into misty, microtonal sound collages that always pursue narratives about the human psyche. For BLAUES RAUSCHEN Utku also explores how ancient and contemporary sound textures, signatures and rhythms can be interwoven. Using a semi-transparent membrane, the performance Dracones aims to explore the inherent relationship between inside/outside, or mother/(unborn) child.

Turkish producer Hüma Utku has been releasing records since 2018 (at that time still under the alias R.A.N.), both experimental sound and complex dancefloor pieces. Many tracks are fuelled by a characteristic pulse that sometimes manifests itself as a beat, then again as a subconsciously perceived chugging rhythm. Her pieces − such as on the albums Gnosis and The Pychologist − are often characterized by sinister sounds somewhere between looming danger and nocturnal temptations. Utku´s complex songwriting is also characterized by a dialectic between modern (European) club sound and thr traditional, ancient sonic landscape of Asia Minor.
