"The Invention of Human"
Dylan Henner emerged on the experimental ambient scene with his first full-length The Invention of the Human, released on AD93 in 2020 and earning a coveted spot on BBC Radio 6 Music’s Albums Of The Year list. Henner is not particularly keen on presenting himself on social media, communicating mainly through wondrously imaginative soundscapes, poetic song titles or visual artworks. The Invention of the Human addresses a series of philosophical questions – What makes us human? What is civilisation good for when there is so much misery associated with it? How will technology affect humanity in the long run?
Playing with such existential questions, answers emerge that, full of a sense of precision, exhaust the sound card of a computer. The result is a collection of superbly constructed human-non-human soundscapes consisting of synthesised voices morphed into two pocket symphonies.
Vita
In Henner’s 2022 album You Always Will Be, he tells the story of a single life from birth to death. He has covered Terry Riley and Su Tissue, released a love letter to a train ride through rural Pennsylvania on the EP Amtracks in late 2021, and released cassette and digital records for Brighton-based Phantom Limb, Belgian label Dauw and AD93’s tape-only imprint Syon.
