Duo Wechselstrom
- Turing's Ink
The Viennese Duo Wechselstrom, consisting of Renate Pittroff and Christoph Theiler, explore the boundaries of electro-acoustic improvisation, noise and minimalist sound design. Their music is a highly condensed exploration of sound as a physical experience – oscillating between fragile silence and eruptive tension. Making a radical reduction down to the essentials, they create spaces in which analogue and digital sounds are in constant exchange. Central to this is their own off-space ‘galerie wechselstrom’, which is both a workspace and a temporary exhibition and performance space. In addition to working for theatre and radio plays, Wechselstrom are active in interdisciplinary fields at the interface of sound installation, media art and social sculpture.
In Turing’s Ink, Wechselstrom transform data storage into something audible and visible for the BLAUE RAUSCHEN festival. Hard drives, magnetic tapes, floppy discs and records are read out and transformed into sound − legacy technologies are given a new voice. Control voltages moving through water modulate synthesizers and software. The performative space becomes a laboratory that makes data streams audible in this homage to computing pioneer Alan Turing.
