Melanie Windl

In the twilight of the shortening nights, the Hurtigruten ships pass my place of stay, Gramarsvika, on their route between Iceland and Norway. As I sink into the sounds of the hydrophone, my thoughts drift to the mighty tankers of the cruise industry. They cross the oceans for weeks at a time without onboard facilities for water filtration and waste recycling. Shipping companies are regularly fined millions of dollars for proven dumping of waste into the sea. Every year, eleven million cubic meters of plastic are dumped into marine habitats by industry and tourism.
