All living things need communication. Even if there is no speech organ, there is a voice. Biological processes generate sound phenomena and provide vital signs.

In our laboratory-like set-up, Simon/Hattenberger use bioacoustic methods to investigate the sound production of microbes and enter into an artistic-experimental dialogue with them. Their “voices” are the instruments that both stimulate and orchestrate.  What becomes audible is a manifestation of life itself.

Breathe in… Breathe out…

Freya Hattenberger’s work focuses on aspects of the body and its relationship to social and ecological environments. She works with video and sound installations and photography. There she deals with questions of autonomy and representation. Sound and the use of voice as an indicator are key elements in her work.

Peter Simon studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne with a focus on sound art. The focus of his work is sound ecology, psychoacoustics, bioacoustics and their influence on the individual and society. He works experimentally on various formats and auditory forms.
