sawing and cracking

sawing and cracking

A forest full of saws: tree saws, chainsaws. Saws nearby, saws in the distance. They rattle, rattle, screech and bawl. The forest is a workplace. At the same time, the forest is a zoo: in the animal enclosure in Heissiwald in Essen-Bredeney, wild boars live behind wire netting and are fed daily – e.g. with leftover fruit and vegetables. When they crack peach stones in the process, a strange percussive sound goes through the forest with their smacking – and a deer roars in the background. In the background there is also rustling: the main road, the country road, the autobahn, air traffic, the urban area, the Ruhr area. At least it was like that 25 years ago: Frank Niehusmann’ssound recordings come from the forests of the Ruhr area in the mid-1990s.
