Ah! Kosmos

Sound art, or the deliberate use of sound, can be used with political intent to criticise power structures. The designed acoustic environment is then no longer a neutral space, but a field in which order and resistance are fought out through sound. Parallel to her bestseller ‘The Mushroom at the End of the World,’ anthropologist Anna Tsing developed the concept of ‘rewilding.’ This idea – of returning the scenes of the Anthropocene to a pre-capitalist state – is the starting point for the series of works and live performances that Ah! Kosmos presents under the name ‘Rewilding.’ Folk songs from south-eastern Anatolia become a whisper, a gentle murmur, a hum. This overlays the artist’s own sound, previously used for sound installations – Ah! Kosmos becomes an archaeologist and collector of her own material. For her, these compositions are also ecosystems in their own right.

Ah! Kosmos – a.k.a. Başak Günak – was born in Istanbul and has been living and working in Berlin for several years. While she creates compositions and (site-specific) sound installations under her real name, she works as Ah! Kosmos in the field of electronic music. Either way, identity, body politics and primitive accumulation are recurring themes in her work. In this context, she has created commissioned works in the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Paris. She has also received funding from Musicboard Berlin. She has released six albums to date; her debut, Bastards, was released on Denovali. Her most recent release is Rewilding (Subtext Records), which forms the basis for her performance at the BLAUES RAUSCHEN Festival.
